Nothing is preventing their return? The wording of prophesy is often open to many interpretations. Has nothing to do with the true name of the land although that would have been a clever way to get around this little obstacle. DestinyWielder: Did Galbatorix know about wordless magic and he was just too arrogant to guard against it? It was a combination of arrogance and ignorance. Galbatorix did know of some wordless magic.
He was aware, for example, that dragons could sometimes work magic without words and the same for spirits. It was the effect of the spells he had to guard against, not the cause. On top of that, Galbatorix never thought to protect himself against a spell worded or otherwise that sought to help him, not harm him. Hopefully this answers your question!
There have been debates about whether or not this action really helped Eragon at all in defeating Galbatorix. I think it did and allowed Eragon to actually pull off a victory.
Not even close. We never did find out for sure, did we? The obvious answer would be the Twins and Galbatorix was bluffing later on about his sources in the Varden. But perhaps he did also have high-up intelligence from within the Varden.
If so will they ever be mentioned or encountered in your books or will you keep it mysterious? Could be. I know, of course. At least at first. Enjoy this article? So grab a shovel, and start digging! I expect that the people reading this already understand the events of the Cycle, but if not: spoilers ahead. The woman clearly possess what speakers of the ancient language would call domia abr wyrda — or, dominance of her own fate.
Convenience for the plot aside, how is it that one not-so-young woman materializes all over the country whenever something is about to happen? The theories about Angela range from bizarre to quite plausible, and each cite evidence from the series to assert their credibility.
How rude would that be? We have every right to wonder about her. So begins our investigation…. Angela is an herbalist who reveals herself to be a surprisingly formidable ally- or enemy. She is sympathetic to the Varden for reasons she keeps to herself, and fans have speculated that her distaste for King Galbatorix may have arisen due to her living at the time of his uprising. Angela appears young, but even she says that she is older than she appears.
Among other examples, the herbalist has detailed elaborate firsthand accounts of events that occurred over years previous. This fact alone suggests that she is, in fact, even older than the Forsworn and the Broddring Empire. She is a witch, hence her poultices and potions and handy healing skills, but as far as we can tell, she is adept at magic, but not extraordinary.
If she were an exceedingly powerful magic user, it would be plausible that she possessed the ability to make herself appear younger, as the elves manipulate their bodies out of vanity.
If you recall, she abandoned her master, the hermit Tenga, in the midst of her apprenticeship. Tenga was introduced in book three, where he lived in an elven outpost in the middle of the Empire. Moving on. Angela is the chosen companion of the werecat Solembum, which alone makes her no normal individual. The fact that she provided enough of an indecent impression to land her in such poor standing with a king, albeit a king of cats, is not surprising of the herbalist; however, this revelation, then, makes us question the nature of her companionship with the werecat Solembum.
Why would Solembum associate with someone whom the majority of his race does not approve? These misgivings aside, Angela has other skills that are pretty random. Where does that get us? The point is, all in all, these various abilities make Angela out to be more than she appears. So without further ado, onward! During my initial search, I happened across a theory suggesting that Angela is of elven descent.
This theory lacks substantial evidence, but it has persisted ever since Christopher Paolini shared the news that human and elf unions had occurred in the past. Half-elves are the results of such unions, and although they certainly exist, they are increasingly rare. There are no elven humans- with the exception of Eragon- included in the series.
Despite little factual support, this is a widely popular theory. One such suggestion, aimed at the Twins, was that her mind would drive an individual insane- not unlike that of an elf. More than once, Angela herself referred to herself as human. Likewise, she shares no physical similarities to the elves, and Arya would likely comment on the fact if Angela were one of her kind.
We can cross this off the list, as there are far more compelling propositions out there. Regardless, the speculation itself is part of the fun. As interesting a plot twist as this concept would have been, this theory was shot down almost immediately. Angela is over years old, and for her to be Selena, Selena would be a century old, which would likely make her brother, Garrow, also ancient. I mean, come on. We know that Brom and Angela encountered each other more than once. Comparatively, Oromis also met Angela, and when he was shown a fairth of Selena, he did not recognize the woman as Angela.
If the women were one in the same, Oromis would not be so daft so as not to notice, nor would any others, for that matter. Just reading that idea drained me of my energy. I find myself wanting to believe it, despite the fact that it is purely speculation.
Also, she was notably able to remain unaffected while Arya , Solembum and Eragon were held in place at the same time while in mental combat. In addition, while infiltrating the tunnels beneath Dras-Leona with Eragon, Arya and Solembum, she expended energy through magic to move extraordinarily fast and to stop time momentarily, killing a large group of Helgrind worshippers with her poniard within the span of less than a second.
Angela admitted that she was the apprentice of Tenga for an "unfortunate number of years". It is unknown how or why she parted ways with Tenga, but when Eragon recounted his meeting him to her, she was surprised because she believed him to be dead.
She also liked carving figures out of wood: when Eragon visited Tenga and noticed the wood figures on the shelf, Tenga mentioned that Angela was always carving things before she left. Notably, that was also an Urgal custom, as was described by Nar Garzhvog in Brisingr. It is quite possible that she is a descendant of the Grey Folk.
It is also possible that she is a half-elf or even a werecat. Some speculate that she is a hybrid of all the races or perhaps an unknown race altogether. This theory is supported by the fact that she knows the customs of most of the races. In Brisingr, Arya said "if we judge by years and not wisdom, no human would be considered an adult among my kind.
Except Galbatorix". Angela implies that she is human by responding "And me", however this comment could have been due to her being aware of the other characters' assumption that Angela is human or due to Angela possibly being partly human rather than actually being fully human. Angela owned a shop next to Jeod's house in Teirm. She first encountered Eragon there, when he and Brom asked directions to Jeod's house. She told them how she was trying to prove that the toad in her hand was really a frog , since there was no such thing as toads, only frogs, therefore concluding that toads cannot be used for anything bad, for example; making teeth fall out, causing warts, poisoning or killing people, as well as also preventing witches from using them in any spells.
Using a dragon's knucklebones, she read Eragon's fortune. Although she was able to discern almost everything, she claimed that it was the most complicated fortune that she had ever seen. Later on, in Eldest , Gertrude says that she has heard of Angela as "a remarkable herbalist, Angela by name, who lives here and is supposed to work the most amazing cures, perhaps a touch of magic". Eragon saw Angela with the Varden when he first arrived there. Angela accompanied the Varden when Nasuada led them to Surda, becoming Nasuada's unofficial adviser.
This act, though rebuked by Orik , greatly aided the Varden in their victory. Angela did not seem to be proud of her tactics though. Also, Orik said that she had been welcomed in the Varden "for decades ". She was one of the very few who were allowed to stay with the Varden without their mind being inspected by the Twins. She met the Werecat King Grimrr Halfpaw , though there was some animosity between the two. Angela reveals her name, although not necessarily her true name, to the High Priest of Helgrind who was horrified, showing she was known among some as being powerful.
However, it is notable that Angela was never under the command of any monarch or faction. She refused to allow the Varden to inspect her thoughts, as she had been with them long before they started the practice. However, she was certainly in favour of the idea of Galbatorix being overthrown and supported the Varden, albeit somewhat half-heartedly at times. Rather than submit to Nasuada's plans for the regulation of magic, Angela again disappeared, though Jeod advised other members of the Arcaena to keep watch for her.
She claimed to Eragon that she would likely settle in the Beor Mountains. While not directly said, there is some speculation that Angela could be the oracle that lived in the Hall of the Soothsayer mentioned by King Galbatorix while he was torturing Nasuada.
He explained she was neither human, dwarf, nor elf. In book three, she is referred to as "seer. While confronting the High Priest in Dras-Leona, she was much more powerful than it and said that they would not have dared confront her if they knew who she really was. She then proceeded to whisper her true identity to the disfigured priest. The High Priest was utterly terrified when she did so.
