Hygelac is king of the Geats during Beowulf's time, and Beowulf's uncle. He is the oldest son of Hrethel. Hygelac married Hygd, and they have a son named Heardred, who becomes king of Geatland on Hygelac's death.

The elders trusted Beowulf and were encouraging of his abilities and his position. The story of Beowulf and its embellishment of the treachery of Grendel was important and meaningful to the social-cultural hierarchy to identify the individual roles of people.
This gave protection to the masses and kept their bloodlines and lives running functionally.
