The half-year-long process of practising has been rewarded — Fricska has become the fastest folk dance ensemble, individually and in a team as well. Actually, they set their own new record, by which the Hungarian folk band has triumphed over the Irish king of tap dance, Michael Flatley.

Besides knocking their iron shoe heels, they stroke their chests and thighs during the movement; the speed is almost impossible to follow, and the steps could be counted by the jury only in slow motion. Those 28 taps took place, astonishingly, in one second, long enough for not much else but setting a record according to Guinness. In fact, about the only comparably impressive one-second achievement that comes to mind is that, in , Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca made almost the hourly minimum wage per working second. But it did mean that he had tapped faster than anyone in the world, no small accomplishment for a Southwest Side Irishman who learned nimbleleggedness through long hours of practice in the family garage.

Flatley says, explaining how the tap jam came to be. Flatley says, ''and I honestly thought I was faster. In general, it seems that people go after Guinness records for the same reason they buy car phones: So they can tell their friends, over and over, that they have one.

Flatley, however, was chasing something grander than local-tavern glory. In the quest for fame, any publicity might be the flint that sparks the match that lights the fuse that detonates the firecracker, etc.

Flatley, who wears a diamond earring and speaks with a slight Irish accent, is a man who seems to have a particular talent for finding cracks in the cultural firmament, wriggling into them and becoming quite comfortable there. In addition to his scores of awards for Irish stepdancing a close but more disciplined relative of the tap dance , he has won flute championships in Ireland, been a top Golden Gloves boxer and started a business that he hopes will turn him into the Col.

Michael broke the mould of traditional Irish dancing by incorporating upper body movement and creating edgy rhythm patterns that departed from the traditional. He has created, directed and produced several successful shows including Lord of the Dance , Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger.

His Lord of the Dance show broke box office records all over the world. It is a record that still stands to this day.
