In my opinion, I think that there has been a coverup, and I think that we all deserve answers. The current and future gymnastics community deserves answers, too. Who do you think is capable of the sort of investigation you envision? The scope of the investigation matters. They need to have access to text messages, e-mails, everything, and go as far back as they need to.
Li Li [Leung, the president and C. Everything we do now is aimed at creating a safe, inclusive, and positive culture for everyone who participates in our sport. Is it possible for USA Gymnastics to change, or will reforming the culture of the sport require a much broader overhaul of the governing body? Perhaps there are some people who have the intention of doing the right thing, but I think the leadership at the top needs to be completely redone.
The United States Olympic Committee is a disaster, too. I know that figure skaters and other athletes have spoken out about abuse. A lot of these organizations are corrupt, and the U. Olympic Committee is in charge of all of that. We now know that as recently as Nassar was abusing athletes under the guise of medical treatment during Olympic competition.
I think the problem is, USA Gymnastics thinks that everything will get swept under the rug because the Olympics is going on, and people will just forget about it. Our story is so public, and the platforms that some of us have are big. Do you think that a punishing culture is inherent to gymnastics? Is it possible to change the culture without changing the sport? That can be a hard way to grow up, thinking that everything I do needs approval from the adults around me.
I just think that the culture of the sport needs to change. In reforming the culture, is there any risk that the quality of American gymnastics would decline? When I was competing, I was so tired.
I was so stressed. We love working hard. We recognize the passion and the dedication it takes. I always say that I competed and did well while I was being abused, and we were being traumatized repeatedly, and there was so much pressure. Maggie Haney was suspended from coaching for eight years after several athletes came forward to report abusive behavior. Haney has since sued USA Gymnastics for unfair treatment.
Do you think that the line between rigorous coaching and abusive coaching is clear-cut or hazy? Does it ever depend on the athlete? They have fractured backs. I had the stomach flu once and was up vomiting all night. When you have the stomach bug, you lose weight. Can you talk about the experience? I was coaching the kids. When I went there a couple of weeks ago, I was scooping ice cream for them.
We rode go-karts. In an interview with USA Gymnastics , she said, "I was 2 years old when my mom put me in mommy and me classes. I always had a lot of energy so it was the perfect fit! Her mother was a gymnast in high school and her father played hockey. At the age of 10, Raisman took her training to another level.

That same year, Raisman won the junior vault event at the American Classic. By , Raisman proved that she had the right stuff to be a world-class gymnast. Raisman went on to win the CoverGirl Classic in , and earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the World Championships. Raisman worked hard to balance her love of gymnastics with her school work. She went to Needham High School through her junior year, and completed her studies online in Though dedicated to her sport, she managed to find the time to go to graduation with her friends, and even made it to her senior prom. It's just a very grueling sport.
Raisman made the U. Olympic women's gymnastics team in It means the world to me. Once the games started, however, Raisman showed the judges that she was no underdog. She beat out Wieber for a spot to compete in the all-around finals. According to Raisman, the victory was bittersweet.
I feel awful because she [Wieber] wanted it so bad. But she should still feel proud. In late July , Raisman and her U. Fans worldwide watched as judges announced the team's medal win—the first gold for the American women's gymnastics team since Raisman went on to win a bronze medal for the beam and a second gold medal, in the individual floor exercise, at the Olympics.
Afterward, Raisman took some time out of the gym to compete on Dancing With the Stars, in Two years later, she became an all-around bronze medalist and World team champion. Then she won a gold medal. Then she won a bronze one, too, just because.
