Harpo's response is to cry out against the injustice of his mother's death. His mother was not to blame, and yet everyone in the community did blame her — because she let her desires seek gratification. And at this point, Harpo's cry of injustice reverberates in echoes, recalling all of the injustices that have been mentioned in all of Celie's letters to God — particularly all of the multiple injustices that have stunted Celie's Harpo's stepmother's rightful sense of herself. Celie's selflessness here, thinking only of Harpo, is almost saint-like.
She realizes now that she can never replace Annie Julia, Harpo's mother, just as she herself knew so well, long ago, that Fonso's new wife could never replace Celie's own mother. As a stepmother herself now, Celie knows for a certainty that she doesn't love Mr. Expected to be physically forceful and relationally dominant, in fact Harpo is given feminine character traits by Walker, making him most at home in the kitchen or undertaking domestic tasks such as caring for his children and nursing his sick father.
He shares his feelings with Celie about his love for Sofia, crying in her arms, as well as showing obvious affection for his children. Unfortunately, Harpo is a misfit in the male-dominated society of the time.
The eventual result is a savage beating for Harpo at the hands of a furious Sofia. There is a strong connection between her and Celie when Celie begins to take care of her when she falls ill. Shug has that power over men, as well. Shug is considered both a lover and a mentor to Celie, even during conflict in terms of loyalty. Mister is far from the ideal husband. He is abusive, dangerous, and unfaithful to Celie as he has many mistresses.
He represents characters who change for the good. Harpo defies the male stereotype, especially in the setting of The Color Purple. He, unlike the other men in the show, shows compassion towards the women in his life, especially his wife, Sofia.
