A monarch is usually a king or a queen. Any country which is ruled by a monarchy is considered to be a kingdom. In a kingdom, the king or a queen has the supreme power, and their word is law. An empire can be said is a large kingdom.

It is traditionally larger than a kingdom and may consist of many different regions and nations under its control. These regions and nations may be far away from the head of the kingdom, i. An empire is usually ruled by an Emperor or Empress, who has supreme authority. Empire is a widespread group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch, an oligarchy, or a sovereign state. The ruler of an empire is an emperor. Empress is a female ruler or a wife of an emperor.

Emperor is considered to be more powerful than a king because he has control over a larger geographical area. The different states and regions can also be ruled by kings. But it is the emperor who has the major control of the empire.

Today the only remaining emperor in power is the emperor of Japan. A kingdom is a domain ruled by a king or a queen. The normal ruler of a kingdom is a king. So how does a queen comes to power? This happens if the next heir to the throne is a female. Also, sometimes if the king dies, his wife becomes the ruler. So, she gains power as the queen. Even when the king is there the title of queen remains.

To gain full controlling power of the kingdom, a queen has to be the sole ruler without a king. A kingdom ruled by one king is called a monarchy whereas a kingdom ruled by many kings is called oligarchy.

If it is ruled by two kings it is called diarchy. The United Kingdom comprises the England, Scotland and Wales that fall under the direct rule of the monarch king or queen.

In the older times, a kingdom was created by conquest or the king inherited the right to rule from the family. In the modern day, there are still kingdoms. An empire might include different countries under its rule and it may not be close to the head of the kingdom but everything must be reported to the emperor or the empress ruling.

One of the famous is the British rule over the Indian subcontinent. You might have read in your history textbooks how the British people exported all the riches and spices and every other thing to other countries and gained huge profit out of that. In the end, it is important to know the difference between a dynasty and an empire.

People who ruled in a dynasty used to rule for a long period of time and it was certain that who the next ruler would be but it was not the case for an empire.
