In this investigation, a curse metaphor drawn from the biblical text is employed in order to illustrate that a literal reading and interpretation of biblical narratives tends to deliberately present humans as cursed. Particular attention is paid on Africa in which poverty is prevalent in a continent which abounds in natural resources.
If the Bible is largely believed to be the source of information about creation, the fall and the resultant curse of sinful humans, one is faced with a complexity of explaining why humans especially Africans suffer while having abundant natural resources at their disposal.
The imagery of "natural resource curse" derives from the interpretation of the biblical text as explained above. Whybray, "Shall not the judge of all the earth do what is just? Crenshaw ed.

They may give curses but you give blessing; when they come up against me, put them to shame; but let your servant be glad. Whoever curses his father or mother—his lamp will go out in deep darkness. The one who gives to the poorwill not be in need, but one who turns his eyes awaywill receive many curses. There is a generation that curses its fatherand does not bless its mother.
Do not give ear to all the words which men say, for fear of hearing the curses of your servant. Give ear to me, you who have knowledge of righteousness, in whose heart is my law; have no fear of the evil words of men, and give no thought to their curses. Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.
Woe is me, my mother, that you gave birth to me,a man who incites dispute and conflictin all the land. I did not lend or borrow, yet everyone curses me. I will bring such disaster on them that all the kingdoms of the earth will be horrified.
I will make them an object of reproach, a proverbial example of disaster. I will make them an object of ridicule, an example to be used in curses. That is how they will be remembered wherever I banish them. I made Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and its officials drink it. I did it so Judah would become a ruin.
I did it so Judah, its kings, and its officials would become an object of horror and of hissing scorn, an example used in curses.
Such is already becoming the case! If you do not obey me, then I will do to this temple what I did to Shiloh. And I will make this city an example to be used in curses by people from all the nations on the earth.
That is what will result from your making me angry by what you are doing. You are making me angry by sacrificing to other gods here in the land of Egypt where you live. You will be destroyed for doing that! You will become an example used in curses and an object of ridicule among all the nations of the earth.
Finally the Lord could no longer endure your wicked deeds and the disgusting things you did. That is why your land has become the desolate, uninhabited ruin that it is today. That is why it has become a proverbial example used in curses. For I solemnly swear," says the Lord, "that Bozrah will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses.
All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever. If you do not listen and take seriously the need to honor my name," says the Lord who rules over all, "I will send judgment on you and turn your blessings into curses -- indeed, I have already done so because you are not taking it to heart. Because God said, "You are to honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.
Then with curses and oaths he said, I have no knowledge of the man. And straight away there came the cry of a cock. Because Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death. But, with curses and oaths, he said, I have no knowledge of the man about whom you are talking. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!
Ezekiel The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. Romans Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth. Ham was the father of Canaan. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. May Canaan be the slave of Shem. Your servant will do as my lord the king has said. So Shimei went away and brought the slaves back from Gath. Or they can work in reverse, backfiring as it were, as in the story of Balaam in Num Through a great variety of forms and uses, biblical curses typically serve to affirm the sovereignty of the God of Israel.
Brian M. Britt, "Curses in the Hebrew Bible", n. Britt Professor, Virginia Tech. He works at the intersection of cultural theory and biblical studies on questions of modernity and tradition. Eve is the first woman according to Genesis; she and her partner Adam disobey God and are relegated to a hard life outside Eden. The oracle of Jeremiah introduces a new historical possibility based on forgiveness rather than disobedience.
Animal sacrifice was mainstream religion in the ancient world, where the ritual killing and cutting-up of animals and burning them in an altar fire strengthened the bond between God and humanity. Hebrew is regarded as the spoken language of ancient Israel but is largely replaced by Aramaic in the Persian period. The set of Biblical books shared by Jews and Christians.
